Trendy Yogurt Blitz Continues

July 14, 2008 · 4 Comments

Can the East Coast absorb any more trendy yogurteries?

The “rocket scientist” owner of newcomer Mr. Yogato seems to think so. Located in DC’s Dupont Circle three blocks east of Tangysweet, the doppelganger for NYC/LA slam dunk hit Pinkberry that opened just a month ago, Mr. Yogato brands itself with lettering styled like a cartoon by Roger Hargreaves (he gave the world Mr. Happy and co.).

At Yogato there are 3-4 flavors available each week (Pinkberry has 2, Tangysweet 3). This week it’s Mango and Marino’s Mojito in addition to original flavors “tangy” and “soft”. There are 40 toppings including Junior Mints, gummy bears and (like Tangsweet) nostalgia-infused kids cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The yogurt is, apart from “original tangy” I guess, more mild than Tangysweet.

If the 40 flavors don’t do it for you, suggest your own, like olive oil.

Who is the rocket scientist behind this genius, if somewhat familiar, concept store? His name is Steve Davis and bloggers say he worked at a space exploration company after graduating from Georgetown business school. Also, say the rules on Mr. Yogato’s Web site, if someone called Mr. Roboto is on hand to burst into song on the loud speaker and you sing along, expect a 10% discount.

So I decided to venture into this new Mr. Yogato on 17th street. It’s next to the 17th street cafe, a favorite of mean where I fill in as a food server when I need a few extra bucks. The place does bring me back to college a bit – the crowd is mostly younger and as soon as you walk in you’ll be bombarded with either a boggle game or be asked a trivia question for ten percent off. You are surprised by the scrunched space. It used to be a vitamin store and it’s still kind of set up drug storeqsue where you order at one counter and pay at another. I got the “tangy” flavor. I was upset to not see the sample lady there with free samples as I had in the post for me to sample the concotion. As I have not ahd Pinkberry or Tangysweet I had not point of reference for the flavor. I did enjoy it and thought it was creamy like yogurt yet had the refreshing tang. I also got oreo and peanut butter cup toppings. I think for the tangy yogurt I’d suggest the fresh fruit toppings which looked great. The chocolate toppings were too overpowering with the tangy yogurt and may be more appropriate for the plain yogurt. All in all it was a great experience however I can only afford the 4-5 dollar splurge for a cup of yogurt every so often. The price is a littel high but I guess that’s DC for you.

Bloggers told me that Steve’s tears cure cancer but unfortunately Steve never cries.

I am definitely planning a yogurt/cold tastiness tasting tour of DC. OK: places to go now include Mr. Yougato (we will practice our harmony on Mr. Roboto pre-pro-biotic tour), Sweetgreen, TangySweet, Rita’s, Dolcezza and Thomas Sweet. We will have to bring along our toothbushes for this tour, but no cavities no glory I say.
