Good Day Sunshine

Good Day Sunshine!  Cheesy Paul McCartney’s words have new resonance today as Baltimore’s skies cleared. A single thunderclap during yesterday’s storm provoked my blind, anxiety-prone dog Foxy Brown to chew out the remaining Styrofoam from inside my apartment door, scratch wood off the battered frame and bend the metal back so it cuts right into the shin as you enter to regard the wreckage of a foyer.

This is the fourth time she’s done this. And I knew what was in store for my little apartment on Calvert, as I sat in a conference room watching the skies open at 10am. We discussed Powerpoint slides while I looked at lighting jagging through clouds hurling rain on the city.

Please, can summer be over now? Let’s shiver and be bitter winter people, just no more thunderstorms?

Saving Foxy Brown

The courtyard in Brian’s’ “carriage house” on Cathedral street makes for great barbecues.

But how is my blind dog supposed to go up and down these stairs?

This is not handicap accessible.

This is not handicap accessible.

See, not only is she driven to anxious door-chewing by thunder, sweet little Foxy Brown is blind as a bat, if that bat had severe cataracts on top of normal night-blindness (anyway, don’t bats have sonar beams to help them find bugs and stuff?). At six years old, the Fox already has macular degeneration.

We seek solutions. Some we have considered:

  1. Move (but it’s so cheap and huge inside!)
  2. Install dog elevator
  3. Make Brian carry her up and down the stairs, every time she needs to pop a squat
  4. Blind-dog-proof staircase

We are trying to accomplish #4 by stringing chicken wire between the bannisters. I am trying to rise above my usual fix-up-phobia (seriously scared of hardware) to take the Home Depot challenge (You Can Do It, We Can Help) for the sake of blind dogs everywhere. We won’t let this happen to the Fox!
