Last night I caught up with an old co-worker and I told her about my troubles conversing with some of the French-speaking Africans at a recent meeting. They told me that they found my American accent difficult to understand, while they understood African/British-accented English. My co-worker suggested that next time I adopt a fake British accent so that they can understand me better. I thought this was hilarious, but also slightly stress-inducing because not only do I have to fulfill my New Year’s resolution of learning French, but now I have to learn to speak the “King’s English”. I always made fun of celebrities when they did this (Madonna? Britney?), but now I’m going to be one of those weird people. (more…)
